The Senior Communications Specialist is responsible for developing, updating, and managing communication products and platforms that enhance internal and external engagement. This role supports program and organizational communications through the creation of compelling content, maintenance of websites and social media presence, and execution of communication strategies that ensure consistent and impactful messaging.

The Senior Communications Specialist will also support media relations, develop communication plans, respond to press inquiries, and assist in grant-related communications, ensuring all products meet the highest professional standards and align with organizational objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, update, and publish communication materials for both internal and external audiences.
  • Design, format, and distribute organizational content, ensuring alignment with branding and messaging guidelines.
  • Maintain and grow an active presence on social media platforms to increase online visibility and engagement.
  • Support maintenance of program and organizational websites, ensuring content remains accurate, compelling, and up to date.
  • Assist in developing and implementing communications plans to support program objectives.
  • Support internal communications initiatives to strengthen employee and stakeholder engagement.
  • Provide support for media relations, including:
    • Drafting and distributing press releases, story ideas, and media advisories.
    • Coordinating media interviews and preparing leadership with key talking points.
    • Responding appropriately to media inquiries in coordination with leadership.
  • Support grant-related communications, including writing, tracking, and reporting deliverables.
  • Produce professional, high-quality communication products that meet deadlines and client expectations.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications, Business, Public Relations, Journalism, or related field.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 8 years specialized experience or 10 years general office-setting experience.
    • At least 3 years of communication and analysis experience, including writing, editing, and content development.
    • At least 2 years specialized experience supporting the messaging of complex business functions or programs, including work across multiple social media and communication platforms.
  • Strong writing, editing, and content development skills with experience producing executive-level deliverables.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines under pressure.
  • Proficiency with digital content management systems, social media management tools, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a Top Secret clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Work experience with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) or other homeland security/defense programs.
  • Familiarity with government public affairs, communications planning, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Experience with graphic design, video production, or digital media tools (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Canva).
